AIHP James Harvey Young Drug Advertising Collection
Description
An account of the resource
AIHP's James Harvey Young Drug Advertising Collection comprises 142 ads covering a range of medications produced in the United States in the mid-20th century. James Harvey Young (1915-2006) was the Charles Howard Candler Professor of American Social History at Emory University; he was noted for his groundbreaking research into patent drugs and quackery, and he made significant contributions to food and drug regulation in the United States, as well. He donated this collection of ads to AIHP.
Most of these ads were initially sent by direct mail from major pharmaceutical companies to a physician practicing at the time in Atlanta, GA (we have concealed this address where it appears to protect the privacy of this individual). A number of these ads are undated; other ads in the collection have dates listed or cite contemporaneous research, and for these ads we were able to provide dates and/or a date range.
For other drug advertising from the same time period, please visit AIHP's Mickey Smith Drug Advertising Collection.

Description
An account of the resource
<p>The <strong>Frank Pinchak Poster Collection</strong> consists of a near-complete run pharmacy window displays designed and published by Frank Pinchak, a pharmacist in Paterson, New Jersey, in the 1950s and 1960s.<br /><br />Each set consisted of three posters: a main poster measuring 26 inches by 42 inches and two side posters measuring 14 inches by 26 inches.</p>
<p>The posters educated consumers about a wide range of public health, pharmaceutical, medical, and other topics. Pinchak intended his"ethical displays" to be an alternative to commercial displays in pharmacy windows. Published by his company Professional Advancement Plan, Pinchak sold the posters to pharmacists around the country. He donated the posters to the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy in 2013.</p>
<p>The collection is currently missing a few known posters including "The Miracle of Cortisone" and "What You Should Know About Cancer."</p>

Description
An account of the resource
Press Release from the Paterson Museum dated September 10, 2008. The release promotes the exhibit titled "The Well-Being Notice: 40 Vintage Pharmacy Window Displays," which ran from December 6, 2008, through January 25, 2009. The release includes details on the opening of the reception and the museum's hours. It also mentions several of the poster topics, such as influenza, life expectancy, fluoridation, senior citizens, and mental illness. The window displays were created by Frank Pinchak, a pharmacist practicing in Paterson, NJ. He founded the Professional Advancement Plan, a program that produced "ethical" poster displays on health education topics that didn't promote manufacturer products. Retail pharmacists around the country could obtain these poster sets for their pharmacy windows. By subscribing to Pinchak's program, pharmacies would receive a new poster set every two months.
