An account of the resource
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Measles Vaccine" printed in 1962. These "ethical displays" were designed and written by Frank Pinchak, a pharmacist from Paterson, New Jersey. Published by his company Professional Advancement Plan, Pinchak sold the posters to pharmacists around the country. He donated the posters to the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy in 2013. The main poster reads: "Progress report from your pharmacist: Measles Vaccine - Although 6 pharmaceutical manufacturers have been conducting independent research for the past 5 years, the measles vaccine expected in early 1962 might be delayed. 2 types of vaccine have been tested: Killed virus type...3 or more injections provide short immunity. Live vaccine type...has caused symptoms of natural measles and other complications. Constant research must be done to produce a more effective vaccine with fewer side effects." Side poster #1 reads: "Measles: 3 stages: 1. Incubation from contact to symptoms - 10 days. 2. Prodromal stage...inflammation of eyelids, sensitivity to light, bluish-white spots on inside of cheeks and lips, fever and cough. 3. Red rash." Side poster #2 reads: "Large scale vaccine tests. Field tests were recently made in Georgia, Seattle, Cincinnati, Rochester and Buffalo, on hundreds of children. Tests were first large-scale attempts to administer a killed virus measles vaccine in combination with a live virus vaccine."

An account of the resource
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Pharmacy's Future" printed in 1958. The main poster reads: "Pharmacy's Future...and the health of our nation...and the world...are geared to the constant and costly battles waged by modern medical research." Side poster #1 reads: "90% of today's modern miracle drugs...were not in existence 10 years ago! Mental illness - 79 research projects are now going on in mental hospitals, universities and other institutions for medicines to control schizophrenia and neuroses. Heart attack drugs - A new anti-coagulant drug, developed from bread mold will be available within the next two years. Working in a matter of minutes, the drug can save lives in emergencies such as strokes and certain types of heart attacks. Pills to counter atomic radiation - The Atomic Energy Commission is doing research work on the possibility of giving populations anti-radio-strontium pills in the event of atomic attack." Side poster #2 reads: "Research yields great discoveries. Cancer - National Cancer Institute states that scientists are on verge of a "major breakthrough" to conquest of cancer. New drug...Methotrexate...has successfully suppressed one type of tumor for the first time. Measles - Trials of a new vaccine to prevent measles are scheduled for the near future. 98% of our population contracts measles during childhood. Complications can be dangerous. Polio - Improved polio vaccine sought. Present Salk Vaccine is made from dead virus. Tests will be made from a live virus vaccine which should give better and longer immunity."

An account of the resource
Press Release from the Paterson Museum dated September 10, 2008. The release promotes the exhibit titled "The Well-Being Notice: 40 Vintage Pharmacy Window Displays," which ran from December 6, 2008, through January 25, 2009. The release includes details on the opening of the reception and the museum's hours. It also mentions several of the poster topics, such as influenza, life expectancy, fluoridation, senior citizens, and mental illness. The window displays were created by Frank Pinchak, a pharmacist practicing in Paterson, NJ. He founded the Professional Advancement Plan, a program that produced "ethical" poster displays on health education topics that didn't promote manufacturer products. Retail pharmacists around the country could obtain these poster sets for their pharmacy windows. By subscribing to Pinchak's program, pharmacies would receive a new poster set every two months.

Description
An account of the resource
Newspaper article from the Herald News (Passaic County, New Jersey) from Sunday, December 14, 2008. The article describes the work of Frank Pinchak, a pharmacist practicing in Paterson, NJ, who founded the Professional Advancement Plan. This program produced "ethical" poster displays on health education topics that didn't promote manufacturer products. Retail pharmacists around the country could obtain these poster sets for their pharmacy windows. By subscribing to Pinchak's program, pharmacies would receive a new poster set every two months. The article mentions some of the major topics covered, such as polio, promising new drugs, like tranquilizers, water fluoridation, expanding life expectancy, and fears of a nuclear attack. The article also promotes the Paterson Museum exhibit on Frank Pinchak titled "The Well-Being Notice: 40 Vintage Pharmacy Window Displays," which ran through January 2009.

An account of the resource
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Tranquilizers" printed in 1959. The main poster reads: "Newest weapon of your doctor: Tranquilizers: a group of drugs which cause peace of mind and calmness. They do not remove the cause of anxiety but allay the condition so that physician and patient can work out a solution together. 30% or more of all office patients have illnesses induced by emotional distresses. Widespread use of tranquilizers in general medical practice allows more patients to react favorably to early psychotherapy, this in turn reduces the patient load on psychiatrists and mental hospitals. Use of tranquilizers has resulted in more productive people living useful lives." Side poster #1 reads: "The new approach for mental hospitals: Tranquilizers have brought about - fewer patient flare ups, less use of restraint on patients, increased granting of privileges to patients, increased discharge rate of patients, less need for shock therapy. Practical elimination of surgical treatment of severe types of mental disease." Side poster #2 reads: "Future Research: Researchers are presently working on a theory that mental disease may be due to chemical changes in the body which "poison" the brain. Specific drugs to prevent this might bring victory over mental illness."

An account of the resource
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Virus" printed in 1962. The main poster reads: "Virus - viruses are tiny germs, smaller than ordinary bacteria. Most are so small they can be seen only through an electron microscope. Electron microscope uses streams of electrons to magnify objects. Can magnify 25,000 times. A virus particle attaches to a living cell directing the cells processes in such a manner that many new virus particles are formed. These new particles then attack other new cells. More than 50 diseases of man are caused by viruses - including polio, measles, chicken pox, flu, hepatitis." Side poster #1 reads: "Treatment of virus diseases - Not affected by antibiotics or similar drugs that work so well on bacteria. Because viruses are associated with the life processes of the ill person, it would be difficult to destroy the virus without hurting the cells. Doctors prescribe treatment to make patient comfortable and prevent development of complications." Side poster #2 reads: "Prevention of virus diseases - Attack of virus disease often makes person immune for life. Doctors try to make person immune before he gets disease. Vaccines are made from viruses...made weaker by chemicals. Examples: flu, polio, smallpox, yellow fever."
