Description
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Medical Aspects of Civil Defense" printed in 1961. These "ethical displays" were designed and written by Frank Pinchak, a pharmacist from Paterson, New Jersey. Published by his company Professional Advancement Plan, Pinchak sold the posters to pharmacists around the country. He donated the posters to the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy in 2013. The main poster reads: "Your pharmacist explains: The Medical Aspects of Civil Defense. A nuclear attack will possibly involve: radioactive fallout, biological warfare, chemical agents. For emergency medical care - At least one member of each family group should be trained in first aid and home nursing." Side poster #1 reads: "What your government has done...160,000 tons of medical supplies are in federal warehouses. Stockpiles include 1,932 complete emergency 200-bed hospitals. You can help! C-D needs workers. Volunteer now!" Side poster #2 reads: "Shelter areas should be completely outfitted. Households should have two week supplies of food, water, fuel, first aid supplies, clothing, personal effects, battery operated radio. Shelter areas should have: Covered can for garbage, container with tight lid for toilet use, supply of household disinfectants to control bacteria and odors."
