Description
An account of the resource
Poster for pharmacy windows titled "What is Diabetes?" printed in 1958. These "ethical displays" were designed and written by Frank Pinchak, a pharmacist from Paterson, New Jersey. Published by his company Professional Advancement Plan, Pinchak sold the posters to pharmacists around the country. He donated the posters to the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy in 2013. This poster reads: "What is Diabetes? Diabetes results when the body is unable to produce its normal supply of insulin required to utilize food. The defect is shown by increased sugar in the blood and excretion of sugar in the urine. Is it widespread? There are one to three million diabetics in this country. For every known case there may be 1 to 2 diabetes victims, unaware that they are affected. Who are potential diabetics? The condition is found predominantly in overweight persons over 40 years of age. Research shows it to be hereditary, although it may lay dormant for generations. Women have a tendency to develop diabetes more frequently than men." Other poster sets in the AIHP collection created by Frank Pinchak feature one main poster and two side posters. AIHP only has this one poster on Diabetes. It is unclear if side posters for this window display exist.

An account of the resource
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Virus" printed in 1962. The main poster reads: "Virus - viruses are tiny germs, smaller than ordinary bacteria. Most are so small they can be seen only through an electron microscope. Electron microscope uses streams of electrons to magnify objects. Can magnify 25,000 times. A virus particle attaches to a living cell directing the cells processes in such a manner that many new virus particles are formed. These new particles then attack other new cells. More than 50 diseases of man are caused by viruses - including polio, measles, chicken pox, flu, hepatitis." Side poster #1 reads: "Treatment of virus diseases - Not affected by antibiotics or similar drugs that work so well on bacteria. Because viruses are associated with the life processes of the ill person, it would be difficult to destroy the virus without hurting the cells. Doctors prescribe treatment to make patient comfortable and prevent development of complications." Side poster #2 reads: "Prevention of virus diseases - Attack of virus disease often makes person immune for life. Doctors try to make person immune before he gets disease. Vaccines are made from viruses...made weaker by chemicals. Examples: flu, polio, smallpox, yellow fever."

An account of the resource
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Pharmacy's Future" printed in 1958. The main poster reads: "Pharmacy's Future...and the health of our nation...and the world...are geared to the constant and costly battles waged by modern medical research." Side poster #1 reads: "90% of today's modern miracle drugs...were not in existence 10 years ago! Mental illness - 79 research projects are now going on in mental hospitals, universities and other institutions for medicines to control schizophrenia and neuroses. Heart attack drugs - A new anti-coagulant drug, developed from bread mold will be available within the next two years. Working in a matter of minutes, the drug can save lives in emergencies such as strokes and certain types of heart attacks. Pills to counter atomic radiation - The Atomic Energy Commission is doing research work on the possibility of giving populations anti-radio-strontium pills in the event of atomic attack." Side poster #2 reads: "Research yields great discoveries. Cancer - National Cancer Institute states that scientists are on verge of a "major breakthrough" to conquest of cancer. New drug...Methotrexate...has successfully suppressed one type of tumor for the first time. Measles - Trials of a new vaccine to prevent measles are scheduled for the near future. 98% of our population contracts measles during childhood. Complications can be dangerous. Polio - Improved polio vaccine sought. Present Salk Vaccine is made from dead virus. Tests will be made from a live virus vaccine which should give better and longer immunity."

Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "4 Steps to Better Mouth Health" printed in 1959. The main poster reads: "4 Steps to Better Mouth Health. Proper diet: milk and milk products, vegetables, fruit, meat, poultry and fish. Proper cleaning: teeth should be brushed after each meal, using recommended dentifrices and brushes. Prevention: examination by your dentist should be had at least twice a year, or as often as advised. Dentures: should fit well; improper fit causes mouth irritation and loss of chewing capacity. In some instances, vitamin and mineral products are necessary for maintaining healthy gums and teeth." Side poster #1 reads: "Do as your dentist advises. Extracted teeth should be replaced to prevent shifting of other teeth. X-rays help your dentist find small cavities that might be overlooked. Your dentist cleans your teeth to enhance their appearance and prevent gum conditions which may be caused by accumulation of matter. A visit to your dentist can prevent tooth disorders." Side poster #2 reads: "Brush teeth often. Upper teeth should be brushed downward, lower teeth upwards from the gums to the biting surface. The biting surfaces should be cleaned by a steady scooping motion. Your pharmacist carries every need for proper mouth hygiene."

An account of the resource
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "The Coming Atomic Age of Medicine" printed in 1959. The main poster reads: "The Coming Atomic Age of Medicine. The world is on the verge of a new era in medicine brought about by the splitting of the atom. Radioactive rays can affect ordinary chemical processes. This will develop new medicines and methods in radioactive chemistry. Last year radioactive medicines were used to diagnose or treat the illnesses of over a million people. Diseased tissue can be reached by radioactive waves without breaking the skin. Radioactive drugs can be given by mouth or injection." Side poster #1 reads:"Over 40 radioactive medicines are now in use. Iodine: diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease, brain tumor localization, angina pectoris, recurrent heart failure. Phosphorus: treatment of chronic leukemia with X-ray. Gold: treatment of cancer and tumors. Chromium: used to determine survival rate of red blood cells. Cobalt: Highly radioactive: in some instances has replaced expensive radium at a fraction of the cost." Side poster #2 reads: "Tracer use in medical research. Radioactive drugs. After introduction into the body, can easily be traced, with a geiger counter. In biological research, this tracer technique has compared in importance with the discovery of the microscope."

An account of the resource
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Your Prescription" printed in 1959. The main poster reads: "Your prescription is a formula calling for specific medicines the physician wishes to have administered...and the directions for use. Rx...abbreviation of the Latin "recipe"...(to take)...and also represents a holdover of ancient mythology 2+ - the sign of Jupiter. Many prescriptions require special labels calling attention to usage and storage. Your pharmacist determines the order of mixing ingredients based on consideration of solubility and reaction. Three styles of weights are used by your pharmacist. Apothecary - metric - avoirdupois. Choice of proper container is determined by the nature of the Rx, its use and storage requirements." Side poster #1 reads: "Durham-Humphrey amendment to the U.S. Food and Drug Law provides that most prescriptions can only be refilled on authorization of physician. Remember - medicines are always prescribed for a specific patient to treat specific conditions. They should never be used by another person." Side poster #2 reads: "By law...your prescription must be filed for at least five years. Narcotic prescriptions are kept in a separate file. Your pharmacist compounds, checks, and rechecks the ingredients of every prescription!"
