An account of the resource
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Tranquilizers" printed in 1959. These "ethical displays" were designed and written by Frank Pinchak, a pharmacist from Paterson, New Jersey. Published by his company Professional Advancement Plan, Pinchak sold the posters to pharmacists around the country. He donated the posters to the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy in 2013. The main poster reads: "Newest weapon of your doctor: Tranquilizers: a group of drugs which cause peace of mind and calmness. They do not remove the cause of anxiety but allay the condition so that physician and patient can work out a solution together. 30% or more of all office patients have illnesses induced by emotional distresses. Widespread use of tranquilizers in general medical practice allows more patients to react favorably to early psychotherapy, this in turn reduces the patient load on psychiatrists and mental hospitals. Use of tranquilizers has resulted in more productive people living useful lives." Side poster #1 reads: "The new approach for mental hospitals: Tranquilizers have brought about - fewer patient flare ups, less use of restraint on patients, increased granting of privileges to patients, increased discharge rate of patients, less need for shock therapy. Practical elimination of surgical treatment of severe types of mental disease." Side poster #2 reads: "Future Research: Researchers are presently working on a theory that mental disease may be due to chemical changes in the body which "poison" the brain. Specific drugs to prevent this might bring victory over mental illness."

An account of the resource
Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Fluoridation of Drinking Water" printed in 1957. The main poster reads: "Your Pharmacist presents the "pro" and "con" of Fluoridation of Drinking Water. The theory: Drinking water containing fluorides in proper proportions transmits them through the bloodstream to the teeth to retard decay. By drinking fluoridated water during the development stages of teeth formation (birth to age 12) children may expect 40% to 60% fewer cavities." Side poster #1 reads: "Fluoridation Facts: Against - Let's Wait - too early to know. Some think long-term effects of fluoridated water may prove harmful. For - Suits me fine! People in some areas have been drinking fluoridated water their entire lives and mortality and disease rates are at standard levels. Against - Harmful to aged! Fluorides stain teeth! Accumulates in bones! Harmful to chronically ill! Some say fluorides are dangerous to general health. For - Prove it with facts! Others want proven facts to back up the dangers of fluoridated water." Side poster #2 reads: "Fluoridation Facts: Against - We cannot be forced to accept. "Forced fluoridation of water violates our constitutional rights." For - Vote of City Council or referendum vote lets each community decide for itself if it wants to fluoridate water supply. Against - Certain sects object to mass medication on religious grounds. For - "Special groups must give way if their rights interfere with the rights of the community as a whole to enjoy greater physical well being."

Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Measles Vaccine" printed in 1962. The main poster reads: "Progress report from your pharmacist: Measles Vaccine - Although 6 pharmaceutical manufacturers have been conducting independent research for the past 5 years, the measles vaccine expected in early 1962 might be delayed. 2 types of vaccine have been tested: Killed virus type...3 or more injections provide short immunity. Live vaccine type...has caused symptoms of natural measles and other complications. Constant research must be done to produce a more effective vaccine with fewer side effects." Side poster #1 reads: "Measles: 3 stages: 1. Incubation from contact to symptoms - 10 days. 2. Prodromal stage...inflammation of eyelids, sensitivity to light, bluish-white spots on inside of cheeks and lips, fever and cough. 3. Red rash." Side poster #2 reads: "Large scale vaccine tests. Field tests were recently made in Georgia, Seattle, Cincinnati, Rochester and Buffalo, on hundreds of children. Tests were first large-scale attempts to administer a killed virus measles vaccine in combination with a live virus vaccine."

This condition could have been prevented through good foot hygiene and correct foot care. Your good health depends on your family podiatrist (chiropodist) as well as your family physician, dentist and pharmacist." Side poster #1 reads: "Basic rules for foot health: Wash feet frequently. Change shoes often. Trim toenails correctly. Wear appropriate shoes. Wear proper size shoes. Exercise your feet. Keep feet dry. Walk right. Examine feet often. Take care...If your feet need attention - see your local podiatrist." Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Capsules" printed in 1959. The main poster reads: "Capsules. Capsules are gelatin shells used by your pharmacist for the administration of powders, masses or liquids. Capsules are hard or soft types and dissolve in the stomach fluids. Empty capsules vary in size and allow for compounding of individual prescription medication to meet the particular need of the physician. The mixed ingredients are placed into the capsules with gentle pressure. Each capsule is weighed for accurate dosage. Empty capsule shells are made from gelatin, sugar, glycerin and acacia." Side poster #1 reads:"Hard capsules come in many colors and combinations and are of value when the physician wishes to indicate a change in medication for the patient. Some medicines are best taken in capsule form to cover objectionable taste." Side poster #2 reads: "Medical research...has developed a new process that encloses tiny drops of liquid in microscopic gelatin capsules. Thousands of these tiny capsules resemble dry powders!"

Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "Your Prescription" printed in 1959. The main poster reads: "Your prescription is a formula calling for specific medicines the physician wishes to have administered...and the directions for use. Rx...abbreviation of the Latin "recipe"...(to take)...and also represents a holdover of ancient mythology 2+ - the sign of Jupiter. Many prescriptions require special labels calling attention to usage and storage. Your pharmacist determines the order of mixing ingredients based on consideration of solubility and reaction. Three styles of weights are used by your pharmacist. Apothecary - metric - avoirdupois. Choice of proper container is determined by the nature of the Rx, its use and storage requirements." Side poster #1 reads: "Durham-Humphrey amendment to the U.S. Food and Drug Law provides that most prescriptions can only be refilled on authorization of physician. Remember - medicines are always prescribed for a specific patient to treat specific conditions. They should never be used by another person." Side poster #2 reads: "By law...your prescription must be filed for at least five years. Narcotic prescriptions are kept in a separate file. Your pharmacist compounds, checks, and rechecks the ingredients of every prescription!"

Set of three posters for pharmacy windows titled "The Coming Atomic Age of Medicine" printed in 1959. The main poster reads: "The Coming Atomic Age of Medicine. The world is on the verge of a new era in medicine brought about by the splitting of the atom. Radioactive rays can affect ordinary chemical processes. This will develop new medicines and methods in radioactive chemistry. Last year radioactive medicines were used to diagnose or treat the illnesses of over a million people. Diseased tissue can be reached by radioactive waves without breaking the skin. Radioactive drugs can be given by mouth or injection." Side poster #1 reads:"Over 40 radioactive medicines are now in use. Iodine: diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease, brain tumor localization, angina pectoris, recurrent heart failure. Phosphorus: treatment of chronic leukemia with X-ray. Gold: treatment of cancer and tumors. Chromium: used to determine survival rate of red blood cells. Cobalt: Highly radioactive: in some instances has replaced expensive radium at a fraction of the cost." Side poster #2 reads: "Tracer use in medical research. Radioactive drugs. After introduction into the body, can easily be traced, with a geiger counter. In biological research, this tracer technique has compared in importance with the discovery of the microscope."
